Michael P. Galvin Tower from 35th-Bronzeville-IIT Station, 34th Street, Douglas, Chicago, IL

Built in 1964, this Modern International-style high-rise building was designed by Schmidt, Garden, and Erikson to house various research departments, administrative offices, student services, and various other offices for the Illinois Institute of Technology. The building stands 20 stories and 237 feet (72 meters) tall, and is the tallest building on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus, and is one of the tallest buildings in the city’s Bronzeville neighborhoods. The building is clad in concrete with ribbon windows, an overall rectilinear, boxy massing, and a recessed first floor facade. The building is a contributing structure in the Illinois Institute of Technology Academic Campus Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Built in 2002-2003, this Postmodern-style building was designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy-Jahn Associates to serve as a dormitory for the Illinois Institute of Technology. The building is clad in glass and corrugated metal panels with five interior courtyards, glass-enclosed elevators, a curved vaulted roofline, and glass wing walls at the north and south ends of the building. The building today remains in use as a residence hall.
