In summer 2007 I got a Sony Handycam plus five 60min MiniDV tapes off eBay.
We used the camcorder a lot between 2007-11, filling those tapes, and it's mostly sat in a drawer since.
I powered the thing up for the first time in years recently and (re-)discovered some footage of the previous owner's July 2004 Mediterranean holiday, that they hadn't erased from the tail-end of the tapes.
With the help of a £6 FireWire cable and a 2005 Windows XP laptop, and at 20 years' distance, I thought I'd share.

Scene approximately 1.75 inches. Remember these? They were the way to go at one point... Mini DV tape. I have some masters still on this format from video production I was involved in a long time ago. Opening up the front cover I was reminded how vulnerable the actual tape was to dust and creasing.

Panasonic MINI DV camcorder from the early 00s, footage from today! A classic car show and a bit of random stuff at the end. Loving the colours and low res this thing delivers, totally unedited and out of the camera, an antidote to todays high resolution digital cameras. I can't compare it to film but there is a naive charm to it that we may well look back on in a few years time with fondness.

I like it so much that I've bought a professional sony pd170 from the same era for not a lot of money, planning some documentaries and short films. Why not join me and dig your old camcorder out or buy another before its too late and have some fun making moving images, post your efforts here on the pulverantilists and my new VHS movie makers group.

Any format goes, as long as it records onto magnetic tape. Flikrs maximum video duration of 3 minutes is perfect for this project, film what you would normally shoot on your stills cameras, street life would be fascinating, show us your manor! Add some music, sound effects, narrate it even, edit however you like.

Now I remembered my old WIN98/NT PC has three 6-Pin IEEE 1394 inputs!

Had not used it for this from memory!
