Costa Rica was full of wonderful butterflies- the most wonderful being the electric blue "Blue Morpho" butterfly. With the wings closed, the blue morpho was brown so the blue was only visible when it was fluttering. I did get a bad image of it but you can find better googling so do that... Anyway, the caterpillar form is also spectacular so here is a picture of it. More fluff!
Wonderful red passion flower. I probably should mention that this flower and the caterpillars were at the butterfly house in Monteverde, specifically the town of Santa Elena. It was a great place to visit with tour guides that seemed to be real naturalists. Rather than just letting you loose in the butterfly houses, they spent time to explain all the species there.
I've seen the monarchs as the fly through California on their migratory route but I didn't know that there were also monarchs that stayed put. The population in Costa Rica don't migrate. Here is the handsome caterpillar form. Its head is to the left, no right, no left... I have no idea.
