Sunset from Carn Pen Rhiw Ddu, Brecon Beacons 2

The far western end of the Brecon Beacons is dotted with stone burial cairns dating from the Bronze Age, a period which lasted from circa 2500 to 800BC in Britain.

Mist and cloud were by now drifting in from the east after a relatively clear day, partially obscuring, and allowing me to shoot directly into. the sinking sun. An isolated fragment of cloud then drifted right in front of the sun, turning a bright reddish orange and taking on the vague shape of a Welsh dragon.

Evening light at Herbert's Quarry, Mynydd Du

Also known as Black Mountain Quarry, this limestone quarry ceased operation in the 1950s, since when its buildings and limekilns have fallen into ruin. As well as limestone, it once supplied lime for agricultural use. The run-off from the limekilns has polluted the ground below, patches of which are still bare of vegetation after decades but also creating micro-environments where plants which can tolerate highly alkaline soil (such as butterwort) thrive.
