On 28 March 2023 a wildfire started on a windy day where a ministry of works was repairing a slump in the George Price Highway. The Belize Zoo staff and the Maya Forest Corridor Fire Working Group fought the fire for 2-days before it was finally contained.

Charred bark after burned in wildfire; Long Trail between Access Road & cut property line. Oak bark does not burn easily because it evolved in environments subject to frequent fires. If fire is not too intense or linger too long around the trunk, the living tissues under the charred "cork" layer will be protected.
