This mosque is also known as the el-Amrawi Mosque, named in honour of Amr ibn al-As, the conquerer of Egypt, since it was the first mosque to be built in the city after the Arab Conquest.
Some date this mosque to 1155.
Sayf al-Din Jaqmaq (1373 1453), was a Mamluk sultan of Egypt (r.1438-1453).
