Where in the body do anti-obesity drugs act?
All current FDA-approved anti-obesity medications contribute to weight loss, although the results vary from one to another. Most of these compounds act at the brain level, to reduce appetite and increase satiety. Newer drugs, such as Orlistat, GLP-1 analogs (Ozempic and Wegovy) and GIP/GLP-1 dual analogs also act at the gastrointestinal level, to slow gastric emptying, promote insulin release or block fat absorption. This graphic shows the sites of action in the body.
