Large Japanese temple bells called bonsho, housed in structures called shoro, are found in most Buddhist temples. They are used to call monks for prayer and for their calming meditative effects. The bells are stuck with a large wooden beam suspended by a rope. This bell at Senyu-ji temple (Temple 58) is being rung by pilgrims participating in the Shikoku Island 88 Temple pilgrimage, dressed in traditional attire with the white jackets and bamboo hats.

Senyu-ji Buddhist temple on Mount Sakure, dating back to 670 in the Nara period, is Temple 58 on the 1200 km circular Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage route. A woman pilgrim (henro) in the traditional white jacket (hakue), with conical bamboo hat (sugegasa) and scarf (okesa) comes down the steps of the temple. Similar to the Santiago de Compostela in Spain this is one of the great pilgrimages of the world, travelled not only by Buddhists but by many other cultures, including many Westerners.
