Fireball...2 — SUN AFTER SUNSET? by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

Fireball...2 — SUN AFTER SUNSET?

► ▓░█ TAKEN A SHORT MINUTE AFTER THE ASTRONOMICAL SUNSET at 17:28 at 243°. This was captured at 17:29:05. The extremes get flattened, the color shifts are less pronounced, the night takes quickly over.

The power line is definitely the one leading south from Molenaarsgraaf and Wijngaarden. The tower supporting it stands almost for sure on Sliedrechtse Biesbosch, supporting the line branch over the river (Beneden Merwede) and distributing electricity further south (or coming from there?.. this also needs research). The building with the flat roof could be one of those in Boven Hardinxveld, I would need to research that too to find out which one. Not so difficult, but time consuming.

Behind the Sun, across De Biesbosch nature resort on the horizon, some 240 km from the lens as the crow flies lies Calais guarding the Strait of Dover.

Was it not for this mighty telephoto lens (which I purchased to use in the mountains), I would probably never have payed attention to some astronomical phenomena like sunsets or sunrises this much.

Fireball...3 — The VERY LAST GLIMPSE of Setting Sun (Please ENLARGE!)

► ▓░█ TAKEN ONE MINUTE AFTER THE ASTRONOMICAL SUNSET at 17:28 at 243°. This was captured at 17:29:23. The extremes get flattened, the color transitions are less pronounced, the lighting gets colder, the night takes quickly over.

The power line is definitely the major one stretching from Krimpen aan den IJssel all the way to Geertruidenberg via Wijngaarden (11 km, or 7 miles from the lens). The huge tower supporting it stands almost for sure on Sliedrechtse Biesbosch (often flooded!), supporting the line arch over the river (Beneden Merwede) and connecting Rotterdam urban area consumers with the high voltage terminal and the always smoking electricity power plant RWE Kraftwerk Amer. The building with the flat roof could be one of those along Rivierdijk in Boven Hardinxveld, like Neptun Repair or Damen Shipyards. I would need to research more to find out which one. Not so difficult, but time consuming. Seeing the setting Sun through its window was a scene that lasted but a couple of seconds.

The wind mill (turbine, generator) behind the building is likely the Killwind at Dordtse Kill, with axes 85 m high, at double the distance (24 km).

Behind the Sun, across De Biesbosch nature resort on the horizon, some 240 km from the lens as the crow flies the French town Calais guards the Strait of Dover.

Was it not for this mighty telephoto lens (which I originally purchased to use in the mountains), I would probably never have payed attention to some astronomical phenomena like sunsets or sunrises this much.

Back From The Space...! by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

Back From The Space...!

► █░▓ JARI (23) has been piloting his drone for just half a year and he already does it with great skill and precision. I was trembling seeing him sent it away in the mist above perilous waters and loosing its sight completely whenever it flew beyond 30 meters from us. The biggest challenge according Jari was avoiding to accidentally hit a ship. These are some busiest waterways in Europe leading to and from The Port of Rotterdam.

Sun went down at 17:07 without us seeing any of it. It was exactly 15 minutes later when Jari decided to fly his drone a bit higher. Even to me as a bystander it was a highlight of the day. Flying your drone from practically the middle of an almost invisible river, in dense fog, standing on a tiny stretch of stone-built narrow land tongue protruding across heavy currents, and sending it high up the sky above such a stage, requires good guts and assured skills.

At 90 meter high the drone left the clouds. Jari flew it all the way up to 121 meter high and made a short recording. Now he is kindly offering it to us hereby. It is very brief, but it has a true cosmic feel to it. ENJOY! With this I am starting my guest album for special (and spatial :) recordings and photographs taken by my friends and acquaintances, the ones that haven't been published before.

Even more impressive in my eyes than the height reached, is that Jari managed to fly his drone smoothly back down to our groyne, exactly onto the launch place we were standing on.

Gazing at nothing in thick fog, just by Jari's appearance instantly changed into an exciting experience for me. I hope you too feel the moment in this small seven-part reportage, my six photographs appended by his short video compilation.

Clouds to Land on the Polder in a Minute by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

Clouds to Land on the Polder in a Minute

► █░▓ THIS IS THE BEGINNING of a reportage consisting of 7 shots, the last one of which is the first guest appearance on my profile. The idea is not new. I don't want to show off by displaying the shots I haven't taken, but rather trumpet the success of my friends. In each particular case I will also describe why I will have included it.

As usually rushing to the nature resort De Avelingen was racing against the ever sooner setting sun. The difference now is two minutes per day. The weather last Sunday was nice and some hope was there to witness a glorious sunset at the bank of Merwede river. Time at this spot was 16:40, almost half an hour before the sunset, and in ten minutes I will have reached the river. A mile to go though, at a spot where you need to turn left and enter the polder leaving the path beneath the dyke.

I see an unusual scene. The clouds appear as if from nowhere and begin to "descend" to the ground, rolling over the polder flats (from the left side of the image to the right). All of a sudden it's dark. At that moment, I know I am late for a sunset at the river. Those clouds won't go away. I can just get the camera to shoot three hikers disappearing into the advancing cloud. The sheep keep on grazing, they couldn't care less as they have their woolcoats. I am amazed at the scene, but out of excitement I don't get to choose the right settings for a good shot. So I resume biking, expecting solely fog soon. And that's exactly what happened. A couple of minutes and we are immersed in the low cloud.

Olympus E-M1 (gen.1) with Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 II. Handheld at 40mm, underexposed ⅓ of a stop, aperture priority f/4.7, shutter speed 1/8000 sec, ISO 25600 (by mistake), WB auto.

FX30 some 30+ meters off the shore by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

FX30 some 30+ meters off the shore

► █░▓ NOT ONLY DOES Jari fly his drone as a real pilot, he also fashions a camera that I immediately recognized - although I got to see it for the first time from a close range. Of course many of you will recognize the "affordable" video pride of Sony, the FX30 brick with its 26 Mpx APS-C sensor.

We are standing at the tip of Rastko's groyne, some 30 meters from the shore. A larger wave caused by now invisible ships can get the camera at this level, but we are ready. The thick fog was a performance challenge for the DJI, not for the Sony, so the FX30 was left unused at this occasion. So the drone stole the show.

I was excited to see it though and Jari let me hold it in my hands for a sec. It has a superb grip and a full set of buttons, unlike many smaller Sony hybrids, thus reminding me a lot of my Panasonic. The shape is not as ergonomic, but not bad at all. The thickness and the form factor make it pleasant and reassuring to hold. The buttons are not as readily accessible, but are safer not to accidentally hit and change the settings when handling the thing on a set.

Olympus E-M1 (gen.1) with Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 II. Handheld at 24mm, overexposed ⅓ of a stop, shutter priority 1/400 sec, aperture f/4.1, ISO 12800, WB auto.

A Flying Deutschman...! by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

A Flying Deutschman...!

► █░▓ I COULDN'T MAKE OUT the name of the ship, but the camera does see more than the human eye in such conditions. I remember I could see much less of the ship than this, and on this edit I can even see the flag - it's a German vessel. Pre-focusing was done manually and just guessing where the boat could appear. She is about a hundred meters away from the goyne, so it means behing her lie another 600-700 m of water until the left bank of North Brabant. Ships are all rushing along at the fool speed. I don't think that would be possible without modern radar instruments and probably also the metal poles at each goyne play some role. Do you know more?

I can't discern the name of the ship, but the young man age of my son has gladly introduced himself to me. His name is Jari (23, pronounced as Ya:rie).

Roll Over Lay Down and Let Me In by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

Roll Over Lay Down and Let Me In

► █░▓ Before the clouds covered the nature resort completely I had caught a glimpse of the sun vanishing behind the clouds. It was a short but mighty scene and I knew that was the last of it for the day. But again I was late at stopping and fetching the camera from the bag. This snapshot is done mere half a minute after the previous. A few more seconds and the reddish tint on the clouds will also be bygone and all of us there will be submerged in total fog.

Before I came down from the dyke I saw the wind park generators sunk in the clouds for about half of their height. The weather was clear until almost that moment. So I knew the cloud layer could not be thicker than 30-40 meters at the moment.

The same atmospherics happened on Tuesday, two days later.

The Brave Flight from Rastko's Krib

► █░▓ THIS MAGNIFICENT short recording of Jari gets to kick off my brand new album with special content of my friends and acquaintances who do not have a Flickr account or publish them elsewhere.

This was a short but very unusual and exciting flight of a drone that has won me 100%. Read the description under the previous images in this Photostream! The atmosphere down there was indeed dark and gloomy just as depicted by this video.

Sun went down at 17:07 without us seeing any of it. It was exactly 15 minutes later when Jari decided to fly his drone a bit higher. Even for me as a bystander it was a highlight of the day. Flying your drone from practically the middle of a big river, in dense fog, on a tiny stretch of stone-built narrow land tongue protruding across the currents, and sending it high up in the sky, requires good guts and assured skills.

Staring at nothing in thick fog has just by Jari's appearance turned instantly into an exciting experience. I hope you too have felt the moment in this small seven-part reportage, my six photographs amended by his short video compilation.

Having seen this for several times now, I realized what it symbolizes to me, why I am almost hypnotized by this Jari's short montage. Its the journey: the passage from this polluted underworld of souls desperately seeking to reach to the spheres above, to another level of existence.
God willing, the heaven will still be incomparably more fascinating... "...was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell..." (II Corinthians 12:4)

CHASER Entering Anchorage Bay by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

CHASER Entering Anchorage Bay

► █░▓ THEY SAY THE E-M1 original has a lousy video. Maybe, but here it has captured some remarkable manoeuvring skills of this Dutch crew entering Vluchthaven anchorage in Arkelstad, with a kind of ship not often seen in other parts of the world. Chaser is a specialized tanker ship built nearby at home in 2023. Being so young, no wonder we see her here in her original configuration. She is 110 m long, 11,5 m wide, has Caterpillar 2 x 680 pk type C 18 Acert electronic propulsion, with 535 pk Electromotor - Verhaar Omega-Jet head screw.
A young couple topped this clip off for me with their sweet photobombing :)

Just look at how the crew members move. If there's anything I admire Dutch at, it is their natural, "broken in", smooth, relaxed but deft aptitude when on water, whatever the vessel. Or is it only my projection of some historical awareness?

— NATURE RESORT DE AVELINGEN —

THE WARMEST DAY of this year (32°C or 90°F) even though it was a Monday, produced 12 August some extra fun traffic on the river. It remained very lively even after the sunset! Here we have a nifty pretty coxwain in the service of a high ranking Naval officer occupying the foredeck. He's saluting the photographer who is perched on the groyne's marking pole. This was 16 minutes before the sunset.

Photography is wonder. Without this capture I would never have paid attention to or even have seen in the first place: how pretty this young woman was, how special her traditional clothing was (especially in this casual moment) and how dearly sweet her young admiral was. Photography helps me – not a newcomer to this world – to discover so many wonderful details around me that I otherwise would have missed. I would have never known that a little admiral saluted me so cool without this capture.

Mixing Colors of the Red-Blue-Hour Sunset Glow by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

Mixing Colors of the Red-Blue-Hour Sunset Glow

FIRMLY TAKING COURSE towards Beneden Merwede. Behind the Undine V ship is Merwelanden island that wedges into Boven Merwede to make the significant bifurcation. To the left is the left river branch that from that point on gets the name "Nieuwe Merwede". Far right is the "village" Boven Hardinxveld which overlooks shipyards in Werkendan on the other side, and the tip of the island that divides the river. Merwede is the largest and busiest branch of Rhein river in the delta which it forms upon entering the Netherlands from Germany.

It's difficult to recreate the elusive moments of dusk at the river just before and after the sunset. The editing software suggests pushing the levels and contrast as if it were broad daylight, and you have to resist the temptation. I am quite satisfied however how it turned out here, but I did spend a lot of time with sliders and curves. This is taken a short minute after the previous capture, thus exactly 10 minutes before the true sunset at 301°☼.
