The Postcard
A Natural Colour Photogravure postcard that was printed and published by J. Arthur Dixon Ltd. of Newport, Isle of Wight. The publishers have printed the following information on the back of the card:
'At the end of a fine row of
houses in German Street is
the New Inn.
This old inn's cellars date
back to 1292, when the
present town was built to
replace the old one which
was being lost to the sea.'
The card was posted in Littlehampton using a 4d. stamp on Tuesday the 21st. March 1967. It was sent to:
Mrs. L. Chapman,
17, Tunworth Close,
Kingsbury,
London NW9.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"Happy Easter.
Do you remember this hotek
where we had lunch once?
Will you be at home in the
morning of the first Sunday
after Easter Sunday as we
are coming up and would
like to see you."
Charles Manson
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 21st. March 1967, Charles Manson was released from the Terminal Island prison in California after being incarcerated since 1960 and ordered to complete a 1957 prison sentence.
Manson asked to stay, telling the authorities:
"Prison has become my home.
I have nowhere to go, and I don't
think I can adjust to the world
Nevertheless Manson was released on schedule at 8:15 in the morning.
Upon his release, Manson re-located to San Francisco, settled in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, and spent 1967's "Summer of Love" forming a group of followers known as "The Manson Family".
Adrian Chiles
The day also marked the birth in Quinton, Birmingham, of Adrian Chiles.
Adrian is a British writer and television and radio presenter.
He has co-presented both The One Show (2007–2010) and Daybreak (2010–2011) with Christine Lampard.
Adrian was also the chief presenter for football coverage on ITV Sport from 2010 until 2015.
His journalistic training and love of football resulted in his presenting business programmes such as Working Lunch and The Money Programme, as well as sports programmes like Match of the Day 2.
He currently works for BBC Radio 5 Live.
Adrian is something of a cult figure. Twice a week, he writes a column for the Guardian in which he exhibits a particular genius for reveling in the banal. These columns reliably go viral.
Headlines such as “I thought it was weird to have a favourite spoon. Then I realised I wasn’t alone” and “We can go to the moon—so why can’t we stop my glasses sliding down my nose?” are pasted all over social media with captions like “He never misses.”
And he never does. He is, to many, the godfather of British journalism: the nation’s only truly good columnist.
