Recipent,
Szolem M. MANDELBROJT (1899-1983)
is a french naturalized mathematician born in russian Warsaw, into a family of Lithuanian descent.
At 20, he moved to Kharkov, where he was a student of Sergei Bernstein.
1920: he emigrated to France and settled in Paris.
1928: he was appointed as assistant Professor at the University of Lille.
1929: he became a full Professor at the University of Clermont-Ferrand.
In December 1934 Mandelbrojt co-invented 'Nicolas Bourbaki' a virtual mathematician.
He'll hold the Chair of Analytical Mechanics and Celestial Mechanics at the Collège de France from 1938, succeeding to Jacques Hadamard.
In 1936, several Members of his Family emigrate from Poland to France.
He was in Charge of One of Them, his Nephew Benoit, who was to discover the Mandelbrot Set, and coin the Word Fractal.
