We had missed this species in Ouyen, when it had been almost guaranteed to us (but I don’t want to talk too much about that disappointment).

We saw them for the first time, a bit far away, on the return from a frustrating visit to Kings Canyon, at a parking lot where we stopped to rest.

This time, we were incredibly lucky, due to a previous bad luck!

On our last day in Alice Springs, we decided to give the Spinifex Pigeons a second chance at Ormiston Gorge.

The directions there are pretty simple: we left Alice Springs heading west on Larapinta Road, and 50 km later, at the only intersection, we had to turn right. Near this intersection, there’s even a monument pointing towards Red Center Way, and on the first day, we stopped there to take some photos.

It’s really well marked, but I don’t know what happened, neither my wife nor I noticed the turn, and it was a few kilometers later that we realized we weren’t on the correct road. I think even Google Maps "forgot" to warn us.

We turned back, and as soon as we turned left onto the correct road, I saw two cockatoos land right next to the road on a bush. The first thing I did was stop and position the car so my wife could photograph from the window while I got out on the opposite side and used the car as a partial hide.

Then, since we saw they were feeding and calm, we gradually got closer and took all the photos we wanted. We just couldn’t find a better background.

But the moral of the story is, if I hadn’t made that mistake, we wouldn’t have seen them!

One last note for those who might not know: This species is not easy to find, and it was one of the ones we most wanted to see. We didn’t see it with its crest raised, but that would have been asking too much!
