The Sunflower Galaxy

This is an image of The Sunflower Galaxy. Located in the constellation of Canes Venatici the galaxy lies at a distance of around 27 million light-years.

Discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1779 the galaxy was catalogued by Charles Messier as M63 in his catalogue. It is also known as NGC 5055.

The Sunflower Galaxy is an example of a flocculent spiral. Instead of well-defined spiral arms it appears to have many discontinuous arms giving a loosely lumped appearance hence the name.

A large, prominent dark dust lane is also visible at the front margin of the Sunflower.

Imaged with a Skywatcher 120ED Triplet Apo fitted with a field flattener. Images were captured with a ZWO 2600MC camera.

A total of 5.8hrs guided exposures during the night of 1-2 April. An annoying breeze during capture caused some guiding issues but you take what you get here!

Calibrated with temp. matched Darks, Dark Flats and Flats.

The Whale & Hockey Stick Galaxies

Clear skies during the night of 6 - 7 April allowed me to turn my telescope to Canes Venatici and image the Whale and Hockey Stick (or Crowbar!) galaxy pair.

This galactic pair (actually 3 galaxies as the Whale is accompanied by a dwarf galaxy, NGC 4627 to its left here) are high in the sky at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Whale Galaxy (NGC 4631) is an edge on spiral galaxy. It appears slightly distorted due to gravitational interaction with its dwarf companion galaxy NGC 4627. This distorted wedge shape gives the galaxy a whale-like appearance complete with "pectoral fin" projecting out from its downward pointing end.

They lie at a distance of 25-30 million light years away.

The Hockey Stick Galaxy, NGC 4656/4657, also known as The Crowbar Galaxy, is a highly warped barred spiral system. The warped appearance, leading to its name, is believed to be due to the interactions between the Hockey Stick and Whale Galaxy and the latter's companion dwarf system.

The Hockey Stick galaxy lies at a distance of around 30 million light years.

Imaged with my Esprit 120ED with field flattener, the scope operating at F7. Images were captured using my ZWO 2600MC camera.

A total of 7.5hrs of guided exposures calibrated with temperature matched darks, flats & dark flats.

The Whirlpool Galaxy M51

This is an image of M51 The Whirlpool Galaxy in Canes Venatici.

The image is actually of two galaxies the large spiral is M51a and it is interacting with the dwarf galaxy on the right NGC 5195 also known as M51b - denoting the link between the pair. The smaller galaxy has been disrupted while the interaction is believed to have enhanced the spiral nature of M51a. The two galaxies are connected by a dust-rich tidal bridge.

Plumes of dust and gas can be seen stretching a considerable distance into space.

Imaged with an Esprit 120ED telescope with field corrector and a ZWO 2600MC camera with an IDAS filter. A total of 5 hours exposure calibrated with temp. matched darks, flats and dark flats.
