종묘는 조선왕조가 역대 왕과 왕비 그리고 추존된 왕과 왕비의 신주을 모시고 제사를 봉행하던 곳이다.

조선시대에는 지금의 정전을 종묘라 하였으나, 현재는 정전과 영녕전을 모두 합쳐 종묘라 부른다. 종묘는 장식과 기교를 절제하였는데, 이는 왕실의 제사를 모시는 공간이므로 존엄하고 신성한 분위기를 자아낸다.

정전은 왕과 왕비가 승하 후 궁궐에서 삼년상을 치른 다음에 신주를 옮겨와 모시는 건물이다.
길고 넓게 펼쳐진 묘정 월대는 “안정”을, 건물 전면에 무한하게 반복되는 듯한 기둥의 배열은 “왕위의 영속”을, 수평으로 하늘 끝까지 펼쳐지는 듯한 지붕은 “무한”을 상징한다.


태조는 한양(지금의 서울)으로 수도를 옮긴 후 가장 먼저 종묘와 사직을 건설하였는데, 유교 이념에 따라 궁궐인 경복궁을 중심으로 동쪽에 종묘를, 서쪽에 사직을 세웠다.
사직은 토지의 신에게 제사지내는 단이다.

조선 시대에 종묘 정전은 태종, 세종대에 이르러 건축 형식이 정착된다. 태종은 종묘 앞에 인공 산을 조성하여 종묘가 아늑한 기운이 깃들도록 한 다음 건물 형식을 고쳤다.

본래 종묘 건물은 'ㅡ'자로 길게 생겼는데, 지금은 감실에 신위를 모신 몸채 건물과 그 양큰에서 직각으로 앞으로 꺾여 나온 동ㆍ서 월랑으로 구성되어, 가운데가 긴 ㄷ자형 건물이다. (지금 양쪽의 월랑은 보수 공사중인 것으로 보였다.)
태종 이래로 이 건축 형식이 종묘 건축의 기본 틀이 되었다.

정전의 월대 아래 동쪽에는 공신들의 위해를 모신 공신당이 있고, 서쪽에는 궁궐의 모든 일과 만백성의 생활이 무탈사게 잘 풀리도록 사계절의 운행과 관계되는 신에게 제사를 지내는 칠사당이 있다.


해가 뜨거나 질 녘에 종묘에 가면 건물에 지는 기둥의 그림자를 볼 수 있는데, 특히 눈이나 비가 오는 날에 그 아름다움은 배가 된다! ☃️❄️⛄️

During the Joseon Dynasty, the current Jeong-jeon Hall was called Jongmyo, but now Jongmyo includes both Jeong-jeon and Yeongnyeong-jeon Hall. The Jongmyo Shrine was composed of decorations and techniques, which create a dignified and sacred atmosphere, as it is a space for royal ancestral rites.

Jeong-jeon is a building where the king and queen move to the shrine after three years of mourning in the palace after their death.
The long and wide-spread mausoleum wall represents "stability", the endless array of columns on the front of the building symbolizes "the perpetuity of the throne", and the roof that seems to extend horizontally to the end of the sky symbolizes "infinity."


If you go to Jongmyo Shrine when the sun rises or sets, you can see the shadow of pillars falling on the building. It is more magnificent, quiet, and beautiful especially on snowy or rainy days.
