Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On a, Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me

buona serata a tutti

A Lunar Crater Chain by Ralph Smyth

A Lunar Crater Chain

Captured during the evening of the 9th March this is an image of a chain of lunar craters. It consists of from left, Ptolemaeus, Alphonsus and finally Arzachel at right.

Ptolemaeus is around 153km in diameter. It has a relatively smooth floor with low walls. It contains a prominent crater Ptolemaeus A which is around 2 km deep.

The central member, Alphonsus, has a low central peak and a system of rilles on its floor.

Also notable are dark-haloed craters towards the rim of the crater. These craters are cinder cone shaped and some believe they may be volcanic in origin. However, others believe it is simply daker subsurface material exposed when the surface was impacted. Alphonsus is around 118km in diameter.

Finally, Arzachel has higher walls and is more regular with a prominent central peak. It is the smallest and presumably the youngest crater. Arzachel is around 98km in diameter.

Imaged with a Celestron C11 SCT with a focal extender and a ZWO 290MM camera with an IR pass filter.

Thanks for looking!

Crater Gullies (THEMIS_IOTD_20250416a)

This VIS image shows part of the rim of an unnamed crater in Noachis Terra. A group of channels dissect the rim. These channels are called gullies due to being on a steep slope rather than a flat river plain.

This martian scene spans 17x 62 kilometers (11 x 38 miles). To see where on Mars this area lies, and to download high-resolution versions of the image go to themis.asu.edu/zoom-20250416a
