Cudillero is celebrated as one of Spain's most beautiful villages, and is well touristed. It has responded beautifully, providing countless picturesque little streets, lined by blue railings, up and down the hills, and several well-signed miradors to climb to so as to work up an appetite before lunch.
We used our tourist powers to begin lunching just a bit earlier than Spaniards, getting us a delightful outdoor table at the best restaurant on the plaza. Parrochas are an Asturian term for small sardines.
Cudillero is wedged into a valley so narrow that, as Penelope Casas wrote, none of its houses actually face the sea.
This is what everyone comes to Cudillero to do: eat a gigantic platter of shellfish, including mussels, clams, langoustines, zamburiñas, navajas and a split grilled lobster. Every single item was excellent, and though it was very expensive as Spanish meals go, it was a pittance by San Francisco restaurant standards.
Note the white sunshades over the cafe and restaurant tables in the Plaza de la Marina, and the Mirador de la Garita, the concrete tower on the right, where we will go shortly.
On the way to Santiago we stopped at Cudillero, on the Asturian coast. On the way into town I had to drive all the way through the center, on steep and narrow streets that gave no sign of us ever being able to leave. But we made it through to the roomy parking lot by the harbor.
