Galah

Unmistakable, with their pink and grey plumage, often travelling in large flocks when food is plentiful, either from traditional sources or grain crops. One of a small group in Currawinya N.P.

Banded Lapwing

The concerned look is possibly due to the fact that there is a young chick nearby. It is very well camouflaged and this tangled undergrowth covers quite a wide area.

Red-backed Kingfishers.

I couldn't waste the opportunity of this shot, featuring my first pair of these red-backed hunters. The problem was they were in a large tree with about a zillion skinny branches! The best I could do was to mask the whole tree, minus the very centre, and fade out 75% of the outside sticks. Crude, but vaguely successful.

Major Mitchell's Cockatoo: Pre-flight

And it didn't even raise that beautiful crest! A flight shot had to ease the pain.

How Camouflage Works

This Banded Lapwing parent is not alone. Beside it, in this low tangled vegetation, is its newly hatched chick. Outfitted in its GI Joe jacket and cap, it is visible only because of a few white, downy feathers.

Ahoy There!

Like a little sailor in his own boat, this White-browed Tree-creeper makes good use of this hollow in a dead tree in an Outback waterway.
