The marks on top of the check rail are where locomotive and wagon wheels have hit the out-of-gauge turnout frog opposite and ridden up and on top of the check rail with serious potential for a derailment to occur.

Rocky's Bad Back

One benefit of working Twin Cities region on any road was everyone worked with everyone. Lots of trackage rights. CN&W and Milw were always good at follow up and acknowledgement of a positive outcome of an incident. Can now fill in the dates and particulars on this old slide. Was train 490 per date on McKnight grade East St.Paul. Witnessing this car breaking the center sill, noticing the lean fouling the adjacent track, a quick phone call to CNW dispatch was made. Stopping any opposing train was imperative. Rules say the when in emergency on multiple tracks, Rule 99 flag protection be provided. Pre cell phone days, my phone was made available to CNW officials for initial planning of resources. Engr Hinshaw was run 8 with a steady pull, no slack action. The car literally just collapsed before our eyes.

Afternoon Hiawatha No.2

ICC Accident Investigation No.3887. Units and cars 1-13 (out of 15) in swamp Newport(Cottage Grove) then locally referred to as Thompson Grove per the housing tract by Orin Thompson. This is now the 80th St overpass in Cottage Grove. The actual Xing involved here is now a service road behind a gas station. The truck of steel stuff pulled in front of Milw No.2 moving at 77 mph. Emergency application rendered a 62 mph impact. Famous unit 15A E6 was badly damaged. As the old timers passed down details, everyone from St.Paul yard responded quickly. Trivia: story goes the claims agent had releases signed and Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson was sitting in the Skytop (the 2 remaining cars on the track) and donated her claim settlement to charity. Thankfully no fatalities.
