A few more tweaks, and they worked really well!
The costume also includes a coat. The coat was to have an extension to hide the stilts - someone [not naming names] stayed up until wee hours of the night (morning??) wrestling her sewing machine into submission to add buttonholes and buttons to the coat. But alas! The estimates of how long it should be were off, so the coat extension got caught in the feet, and he wasn't able to use it today. So much for motherly devotion...
