Edward M. Horsington's Memorial (Far West New South Wales, Outback Australia)

Horsington Drive, Broken Hill, commemorates Edward M Horsington (1878 - 1947), who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sturt from 1922 to 1947.

Edward M Horsington was educated at Maryborough, Victoria, and worked as a drover and miner in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, and Broken Hill for many years, eventually becoming the secretary of Broken Hill branch of the Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen's Association from 1912 until 1922.

Originally a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), although expelled in 1936, he was readmitted. He joined Heffron group after the 1938 election. He was also commissioned as a Justice of the Peace in 1914.

Horsington was the son of farmer and fencing contractor John Waygood, and Julia Farrell. He married Rosalie S. Bryksky on the 31st of December 1906 and one daughter. His resting place is at South Head Cemetery from St Patrick's Roman Catholic church in Waverley.

According to documents from Trove (trove.nla.gov.au) on the 24th of July 1947, the Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW) newspaper reported:

Former member for Sturt in the State Parliament, Mr. Edward Matthew Horsington, died at Waverley Memorial Hospital, Sydney, yesterday. He was 69. Born and educated at Maryborough, Victoria, Mr. Horsington worked on pastoral properties and, on mines in Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales before entering the State Parliament over 24 years ago. He was prominent in local union circles before Parliamentary election and was of the local branch of the F.E.D. and F.A. for some years., An extremely popular official, he took part in the civic life of the city and served as a city alderman. During nearly a quarter of a century in the State Parliament as member for Sturt, Mr. Horsington was a keen advocate of the needs of the people of the West. He never wavered in his advocacy of the Darling River Water Scheme, and at the ceremony connected with the turning of the first sod visiting Parliamentarians paid a tribute to his work. During his long term in Parliament, Mr. Horsington was only elected unopposed on one occasion.

According to documents from Trove (trove.nla.gov.au) on the 10th of September 1951 the Barrier Daily Truth (Broken Hill, NSW) newspaper reported:

Details of a plan for a "living memorial" in the form of a tree-lined avenue were announced at the unveiling of a memorial cairn to the late E. M. Horsington on the Drive yesterday afternoon. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony the Mayor (Ald. W. Riddiford) said the Council proposed to line Horsington Drive with red gums and jacarandas. The North Mine and Zinc Corporation had donated 180 trees from their own nurseries for the project he said. It was hoped that friends of the late Mr. Horsington and citizens, would help to plant the trees.

Edward Horsington was a great lover of trees and look an interest in regeneration before there was any active movement in that direction. The planting of trees along this drive is something that would have given him great pleasure," he said. The Horsington Drive extends from Williams Street along the Silverton Road to the end of the regeneration area. The memorial cairn unveiled yesterday stands on the south western side of the road about half a mile from Williams Street. The stone was donated by Australian Blue Metal Co. and the plaque was cast by the Zinc Corporation.
