What are you doing down there?

This very distinctive bird known as crestudo (in Spanish) or lark-like brushrunner (Coryphistera alaudina) is a species of bird in the Furnariinae subfamily of the ovenbird family Furnariidae, native to south-central South America.

About this picture: not sure what he was looking at but certainly something or someone on the floor got his attention 😊

More details about these beautiful little guys can be found in the description of a picture from this bird species that I posted on Oct 22, 2024, available at: www.flickr.com/photos/195564216@N07/54086334734/

Blurry torcaza or eared dove — A symbol of peace for the New World

The eared dove (Zenaida auriculata) is a New World dove, resident breeder throughout South America, and on the offshore islands from the Grenadines southwards. Known in Spanish as torcaza or tórtola among other names.

In the Córdoba region in Argentina, the eared doves are known as palomas doradas because of the shining feathers sometimes present in their plumage.

Doves have long been regarded as symbols of peace, purity, and love. Their graceful flight and gentle demeanor have enchanted cultures worldwide. From ancient civilizations to modern societies, the dove has remained a powerful emblem of hope and spirituality.

Talampaya's rock formations — Silent voices of our living Planet (Explored 14: 12 Jan 2025)

Talampaya National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Talampaya) is a national park located in the east/centre of La Rioja Province, Argentina. It was designated a provincial reserve in 1975, a national park in 1997, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Here are the sediments of the Triassic Period, accumulated over millions of years in the depths of the planet, exposed during the process of formation of the Andes Mountains. The force of nature prevails in the reddish walls sculpted by water and wind, in the flight of condors embracing the Canyon, in the sky and the pure air of this semi-desert.

Among its most famous geological features is the Talampaya Canyon, a breathtaking gorge that rises up to 150 meters high. The canyon and surrounding areas showcase natural sculptures and formations, including the Monk (at the right of my picture), the Tower, and the Cathedral, silent testaments of the erosive power of water and wind over the ages...

Radiant calandria or chalk-browed mockingbird at low light after sunset

Merry Christmas to everyone, let’s all flow in harmony with the love/light of the Universe.

In photography, same as in life, some pictures turn out to be so good when we least expect them to. This is what happened when I got this picture from this little guy in my backyard at dusk time, I did not expect it to look so great (well, I feel really proud of this unexpected result 😊). As someone unknown wrote: “Things might not always go as you planned but they’ll always end up as they should.”

The calandria or chalk-browed mockingbird (Mimus saturninus) is a bird in the family mimidae widely distributed in South America. More details about this gorgeous species can be found in the description of a picture I uploaded on Oct 27, 2024 and available at: www.flickr.com/photos/195564216@N07/54097483401/

Couple of house sparrows or gorriones comunes (Passer domesticus) dining in my backyard 😊

This is a species of bird of the sparrow family Passeridae, found in most parts of the world. It is a very social bird, strongly associated with human habitation, and can live in urban or rural settings

The male's plumage (bird in the left of my picture) is grey on the underparts, somewhat darker on the cheeks and crown. Between the beak and eyes there is a black band resembling a mask. The female's plumage (bird in the right) is almost uniformly grey on the underparts and breast, with a brownish tone on the wings, crown and tail, and a lighter superciliary band.

Brown cacholote or cacholote castaño, in Argentina (Pseudoseisura lophotes)

This is a species of bird in the Furnariinae subfamily of the ovenbird family Furnariidae. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It breeds in the austral spring and summer, is monogamous and is thought to mate for life.

This is a confident bird, very active, mobile and acrobatic, so not really easy to photograph. So far, this is the only good picture I have been able to get so from this beautiful bird.

The little guy in my picture looks curious but not sure about what.

Chingolo or rufous-collared sparrow —A colorful beauty in my backyard

Last Sept 28th. I published another picture of this beautiful bird but I think this one better honors the radiant beauty of this species of sparrow known also as the sparrow of the new world (gorrión del nuevo mundo).

The rufous-collared sparrow or Andean sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) —chingolo común— is an American sparrow found in a wide range of habitats, often near humans, from the extreme south-east of Mexico to Tierra del Fuego. More details about this species are provided in my previous picture at: www.flickr.com/photos/195564216@N07/54028028654/

Cute southern martin —golondrina sureña— flying into their nest

It turned out that the cute couple of southern martins in my previous picture is a couple of lovely parents nesting in the roof, this picture shows one of the little parents flying into their nest.

It is possible: humans and nature can live in harmony.

This species: southern martins —golondrinas negras or sureñas (Progne elegans). Some authors place the species as: Progne modesta. More details are provided in the description of my previous picture.

Couple of southern martins —golondrinas sureñas— feeling observed

This cute couple of southern martins or golondrinas negras or sureñas (Progne elegans) did not seem very happy when they noticed that my lens was watching and disturbing their lovely get together on that roof, sorry little guys but you were looking so cute!.

This is a species of bird in the family Hirundinidae native to South America, it is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay, and has been observed in Chile on very rare occasions. They live on sea coasts, in river ravines or reservoirs, and are also often seen in urban areas. They nest in hollows of ravines or on roofs and ceilings of houses.

At first glance, they appear completely black; in more detail, the male has metallic blue tones on the back and belly, unlike the female, which has a grey ventral area with dark streaks.

Some authors place this species as: Progne modesta

“Are you looking at me?” —this great kiskadee seems to say

This gorgeous and determined little guy is a benteveo or great kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), also known as bienteveo común, wichi or güichichi, ajisero pitogüé and cristofué, among other local names. It is a passerine bird in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae native to tropical America (Neotropics), where it is widely distributed from the south of the United States to central Argentina.

Great kiskadees are monogamous and defend their territory. Not being appreciated as songbirds, they are not usually kept caged and therefore have luckily escaped the depredations of poaching for pet trade.

Cute and colorful chingolo in my backyard: un gorrión del nuevo mundo (new world sparrows)

The rufous-collared sparrow or Andean sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) —chingolo común— is an American sparrow found in a wide range of habitats, often near humans, from the extreme south-east of Mexico to Tierra del Fuego. The adult has a stubby grey bill, and a grey head with broad black stripes on the crown sides, and thinner stripes through the eye and below the cheeks. Young birds have a duller, indistinct head pattern, with brown stripes and a buff ground colour. They lack the rufous collar and have streaked underparts.

Throughout its wide distribution range, it breeds at all times of the year, but only locally during defined seasons. The breeding season is usually limited by the availability of food and, ultimately, by rainfall.
