5 Three Pairs of Watchful Eyes

While the duckling checked out the baby turtle, the older ducks watched nearby. Then they all swam into heavy rushes and I didn't see them anymore.

2 Mom & Dad Have A Teenager & A Baby

This appeared to be a family unit with adult male, adult female, juvenile and young duckling. I had never heard of blue-winged teal nesting in our area nor seen anyone post photos of the ducklings.

1 My 1st Blue-Winged Teal Duckling

I was watching 3 blue-winged teal, a male, a female and an older juvenile. Suddenly I realized there was a duckling that was with the group. There were no other ducks anywhere near and no other ducklings. At first I thought it was a mallard duckling following them but later at home I was able to look up what blue-winged teal ducklings look like and it was a match. My first time to see one.

Shot of a greater yellowlegs by a blue-winged teal. Kept this one for size comparison. Greater yellowlegs are large.

We're Going Tubing!

Hated to see this tire floating in Sunset Bay. Still was funny to see the coots and blue-winged teal napping in the sunshine as they floated along.

Girl Power by Kaptured by Kala

Girl Power

Just a couple of gals hanging out and trying not to be noticed by the paparazzi. Attempts to conceal identity are not very effective. Ms mallard, I recognize you by your size and those bright orange legs. Ms blue-winged teal thinks she is clever by showing her green speculum and hiding her blue shoulder patches. Trying to pass herself off as a green-winged teal. Ha, y'all don't fool me.

It was really nice getting a shot of them both together. And fairly close too.

Pretty Little Female Blue-winged Teal

The male blue-winged teal had brought his mate with him. She also swam by me fairly close. These females can be hard to identify so really helps when they are part of a pair.

Male & Female Blue-winged Teal

She was completely hidden behind her mate. I didn't know she was there until her head popped up. You can see a tiny hint of the green speculum on the male. And his red eyes.

Then There Were Three

While I was photographing them, a third flew into to join them. Did not see her coming in time to get her in flight. Obviously my presence was not bothering them, the one in the middle is falling asleep.

First There Were Two

Every now and then, blue-winged teal will come close to where I am. Females more often than males. These two seemed very relaxed.

Hidden Teal

Several male and female blue-winged teal were hiding among the rushes. The reflection of the grasses added to the camouflage. It was hard to tell where the grass ended and the water reflection began.

Blue-winged Teal

A female followed by 2 juvenile blue-winged teal. They get their name by blue that shows in their wings when they fly but you can't see it when they are on the water. Like many other types of teals, they have metallic green speculums on the trailing edge of the wings and you can see a glimpse of that with the middle teal.
