This Oriolo “Rockabilly Redhead” electric guitar has a very special connection to the Smithereens’ history. On January 13, 2018, members of the Smithereens paid tribute to Pat DiNizio, the band’s vocalist who passed away a month prior, in an all-star charity concert. Titled “Time and Time Again: A Celebration of Pat DiNizio,” the concert and livestream raised funds for the Pat DiNizio Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, N.J. In January of 1994, Nirvana entered Seattle’s Robert Lang Studios for what would prove to be their final recording session. The band booked three days in the studio, with Kurt Cobain only present on the final day. Only one full song was completed—the now-classic “You Know You’re Right.” This Shure PE50 microphone was used by Kurt to record the vocal track on the song. Though predominantly used as a live microphone rather than a studio tool, Kurt used the PE50 because he disliked wearing headphones when recording his vocals and this mic was well-suited for that approach.
