Carolina pigmy rattlesnakes

My lifers! These are from a day hike in September where I was able to spot 10 of these incredible little snakes with some friends.

These snakes are really just a breathtaking and amazing species. The ecological niche they occupy is also quite interesting.

Their diet consists of small lizards, frogs, and insects. They rely mostly on sitting still to survive.

Inherently, this species is rare. They face competition from other snakes and fall prey to almost everything!

Small isolated populations are common when suitable habitat is surrounded by water creating “mini islands” of rattlesnakes.
