Cheering from the boat ramp as teams go down-river to the starting line

As the various categories of race (boats of 2, 4, or 8 rowers; in a few cases also 1-person competitors) are run, the excitement rises in the crowd assembled on the banks of the Grand River, cheering for their own teams.

Although friends and family were scattered all along the racing course, the finish line (to the right, up-river, about 500 or 600 meters) and this boat ramp seemed to gather small crowds cheering for their schools.

Rowing competition - media tent supplied with power

Recording equipment, seating and electrical power under this tent were prepared for the use of news people reporting on the high school competition taking place all day on Saturday, April 26 this year.

Rowers pull hard and all together to shoot up the river

The paved path to the right parallels the Grand River in this long, straight stretch of water in a north to south orientation. As people on foot move up and down the pavement, teams move up and down the current to get from the starting line to the finish line. Then after competing, the teams move alongside the temporary pier to disembark and lift their vessel from the chilly water.

The trophy stand near the media tent (center right) and the volunteers check-in tent (to the left) attracted the interest of some of the people streaming up the path and down the path, right of this frame.

High Jump in the Rain

As if high jump isn't hard enough as it is, she is executing a Fosbury Flop in the rain! She didn't make it over this time, but she ended up in a tie for 6th place having cleared 4'8". Nice job under tough conditions.

Not Quite

Her high jump didn't go as planned here, but she still finished in a tie for 6th place with a strong jump of 4'8".

TSSAA Blue Cross Bowl - 4A State Championship Game - Finley Stadium - Chattanooga, Tennessee

For the last 3 years, my son (who you can see back in my photo-stream playing football) has been a high school football coach (defensive backs) for the Upperman High School Bees. This year, they made it all the way to the TSSAA 4A State Championship game in the Blue Cross Bowl in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This was the first ever appearance in the championship game by Upperman and they played the Pearl Cohn Firebirds out of Nashville, Tennessee. As you can see from the photograph above, it was a rainy, cold, dreary day in Chattanooga but we witnessed some great high school football between two teams hungry to take home a state title. Unfortunately, Upperman came up just short and lost to Pearl Cohn 36 - 27. Congratulations to the Firebirds but I am most proud of the fight in the Upperman Bees football team and the way that I've watched my son interact with his players throughout the season. I know that he is doing something that he loves & enjoys and that all makes me proud! Congratulations to him, the rest of the coaching staff, and all the players of the 14-1 state runner-up Upperman Bees Football Team...I'm already looking forward to next season! Go Bees!

What Goes Up...

...must come down!

This early season track meet was littered with the early season jitters, lack of practice, repetitions, etc. Performances usually get cleaner as the year progresses,

High jump is not the most natural event, anyway, and the Fosbury Flop is not the easiest thing to execute.

Get up and try again!

Another Successful Jump

This is what success looks like in the high jump: you end up on your back, legs in the air, bent over and presumably very sore the next day.

I think the ability to execute the Fosbury Flop is pretty impressive.

342/R365 - Cookeville Cavalier Football Helmet

With the close of the high school football season last weekend in Tennessee, this seemed like an appropriate photograph from my 2013 Photography 365 to post today. This football program has meant a lot to myself and my family! My son played for the Cavaliers for 4 years and my daughter was a manager for 4 years as well. My wife and I chased this team all over Middle Tennessee (and a bit of East TN) and for seven straight years, I missed only 1 game (including scrimmages, pre-season, regular season, playoffs, etc.) I even was asked and served as the team photographer for a few years and loved every minute!

This photo was taken in 2013 during my previous Project 365…please visit my album for this “REMASTERED” Project 365 as I revisit each day of 2013 for additional photos to share!!

Little Sisters

Four random young ladies where eager for me to photograph them, while I was shooting for the high school marching band and football team. They saw me with my camera and just wanted a shot!
I loved it!
