Cheering from the boat ramp as teams go down-river to the starting line

As the various categories of race (boats of 2, 4, or 8 rowers; in a few cases also 1-person competitors) are run, the excitement rises in the crowd assembled on the banks of the Grand River, cheering for their own teams.

Looking at the shadows on the table from this angle, the contrast of orange bike racks and the bright blue of the car is eye-catching in this light.

Fire station #9 on Plainfield Avenue Northeast, Saturday morning

About 15 minutes earlier one of the fire company's trucks departed. Now this one is basking in the bright spring sunshine, having just been washed by the fire-fighters.

Rowers pull hard and all together to shoot up the river

The paved path to the right parallels the Grand River in this long, straight stretch of water in a north to south orientation. As people on foot move up and down the pavement, teams move up and down the current to get from the starting line to the finish line. Then after competing, the teams move alongside the temporary pier to disembark and lift their vessel from the chilly water.

Light and shadow in several shapes-1

The morning light from this east-facing window casts strong shadows of the sun protection on the glass. Most of the photo has the geometry of straight lines, but the pot of pencils on the table and the wheel of the car at the curb defy those lines.

Big screen for electric-vehicle operation

If it is anything like phone, tablet, or PC, then eV owners will want to keep all apps updated for security and for performance, bug fixes and new functions. In effect, the old gas guzzlers needed tune-ups but the new eV needs rebooting and continuous checking on updates. The old car was dependent on diagnostic computers and certified mechanics (until the 1980s DIY was a mark of pride for some owners) but the new car must always be within reach of the Internet.

This Chevy Equinox is a leased eV with multiple camera views, interior climate control, entertainment center, and of course driving instruments.

More vivid than ordinary lived experience

The expression comes to mind of visual delight, especially gratuitous pleasure that need not accomplish anything more than viewing fun, "eye candy."

Street front at Mexican restaurant in downtown Grand Rapids

For decades the home-style cooking has fed the souls and stomachs of residents and visitors to the city. Seen through the plastic lens of this toy camera, much of the texture and detail is lost, but the result is something like a watercolor painting.

Intoxicating color in the days of few synthetic dyes

When this church opened in the late 1800s the range of artificial fabrics and dyes was much more limited than today. So most people seeing the vivid stained glass colors and themes portrayed on walls and at the front and rear of the church would be much more impressed than modern viewers who carry millions of pixels on pocket-size screens or see full color on oversized TVs at home or work.
