Prins Philippe - Ostend/Oostende - Belgium - Postcard by James Henton

Prins Philippe - Ostend/Oostende - Belgium - Postcard

The early 1970's saw new chunkier shaped ferries appearing on the Dover-Ostend rout, 'Prins Philippe' in 1973 and 'Prince Laurent' in 1974, with bow and stern doors and a step-change in vehicle carrying capacity.

'Prins Philippe' seen here entering Ostend, in almost-new condition. The Sealink / RMT logos didn't improve the looks.

I believe this is 'Prins Philippe' due to the original paintwork, which dates the photograph to about 1973. Soon after, possibly at the guarantee dry-docking, the white paintwork was taken down a further deck and the 'Sealink' logo reduced in size.

Sold to Italy in 1986 becoming 'Moby Love', then to Greece 1993.

Entering the harbour at Ostend, showing the long beach / strand to the north, towards Blankenberge.

Prins Phillipe - Dover Strait by James Henton

Prins Phillipe - Dover Strait

Seen somewhere in the Dover Strait. The first Belgian Marine ship to appear with the RMT logo on the funnel.

An advance on previous Belgian ferries in capability if not looks. However she seems very traditional now.

At this stage she was only a year old, the first of 2 sisters, the second being 'Prince Laurent'.

Sold to Italy in 1986, becoming 'Moby Love', later to Greece for Greek island services.

The (Kodak) Instamatic slides appear to have faded but I seem to recall they were originally like this, but had become a bit grubby over the years.
