Prins Philippe - Ostend/Oostende - Belgium - Postcard by James Henton

Prins Philippe - Ostend/Oostende - Belgium - Postcard

The early 1970's saw new chunkier shaped ferries appearing on the Dover-Ostend rout, 'Prins Philippe' in 1973 and 'Prince Laurent' in 1974, with bow and stern doors and a step-change in vehicle carrying capacity.

'Prins Philippe' seen here entering Ostend, in almost-new condition. The Sealink / RMT logos didn't improve the looks.

I believe this is 'Prins Philippe' due to the original paintwork, which dates the photograph to about 1973. Soon after, possibly at the guarantee dry-docking, the white paintwork was taken down a further deck and the 'Sealink' logo reduced in size.

Sold to Italy in 1986 becoming 'Moby Love', then to Greece 1993.

Dover - Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais - France - Postcard

The classic BR Sealink Turbine Steamer 'Dover' heading astern into Boulogne in this 1972-bought postcard.

Later became 'Earl Siward', 'Sol Express' and then the Nightclub ship 'Tuxedo Royale' at Newcastle for 20 years. Fire in 2017 while laid up.

I always thought this ship was a good example of the design evolution of British Railways Car Ferries.
