California Sister butterfly trying to catch some rays

Here is a California Sister (Adelpha bredowii) butterfly leaning over like a living solar collector trying to catch some rays on a stem of native Southern Bush Monkeyflower (Diplacus longiflorus) in the woods today. It was foggy and windy today, and it was really too cold for this butterfly to be active. I've seen other butterflies doing the same thing, see this photo and this photo. I don't imagine it did any good today. (San Marcos Pass, 5 May 2025)

Lorquin’s admiral, Limenitis lorquini, subfamily Limenitidinae, family Nymphalidae. by Thomas Langhans

Lorquin’s admiral, Limenitis lorquini, subfamily Limenitidinae, family Nymphalidae.

Photographed on San Bruno Mountain in Buckeye Canyon, city of Brisbane, county of San Mateo, California.

The following information is from www.knowyourinsects.org via email:

Gorgeous butterfly! It looks like a Lorquin's admiral -- very close to a White Admiral -- but the White Admiral isn't found in California. You actually sent me a couple of great shots of it a few years back: www.knowyourinsects.org/Lepidoptera1_Butterflies_Page2.ht... (from where the following information is from).

Lorquin’s admiral, Limenitis lorquini, subfamily Limenitidinae, family Nymphalidae.
□ Lorquin admiral’s is a fighter: The males will defend their territories, not only attacking other intruding males, but also buzzing large birds that venture into their turf.
□ Lorquin’s admiral gets its name from entomologist Pierre Joseph Michel Lorquin. Originally from France, he traveled the world from 1849-1869, studying insects in northwestern Africa, Spain, China, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, Colombia, New Guinea and the western United States. Quite a life!

Band-celled Sister/Mexican Sister (Adelpha fessonia) Cameron County, Texas

This tree-top dweller is not usually spotted at eye level so this was a special treat to see it up close perched low in a ray of sunshine in a dark forest.

About twenty species of Adelpha fly in Mexico and thru Central America down to Panama. Only two of the neotropical genus Adelpha may be sporadically seen in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

This gorgeous butterfly is (regrettably) sometimes bred for show and may be seen in butterfly zoos. I only photograph butterflies in the wild and this individual is wild and was photographed in its natural habitat.
