Boarding time at Barra (EGPR), BN Islander 1/72

I know I have been posting my plane models a lot, but only one hadn’t yet had her turn being pictured on the Barra runway diorama. G-BOMG, Britten Norman Islander - British Airways livery, operated by Loganair for both commercial passenger and air ambulance services o.b.o Scottish Ambulance Service.

Admittedly I had been holding back on giving Mike Golf a Barra photoshoot, I was awaiting delivery of an Oxford Diecast model - the Royal Air Force, Range Rover Gloster Saro TACR2. I removed the RAF decals and applied the thin yellow line, painted the blue warning beacon orange, added two blue lights of my own and changed the registration plates to civilian (which actually belong on a minibus).

Like other small or low frequency airports around the world, Firefighters at Barra have secondary duties once the aircraft is safely parked on the sand; baggage handling, marshalling, FOD inspections etc. I have depicted two ARFF Firefighters doing just that, one checking the chocks are in place and the other carrying luggage.

The Truck Firefighting Airfield Crash Rescue 2 Tonne 6x4 Mark 2, Range Rover (TACR2) is a diecast model by Oxford, 1:76 scale. Originally bearing military VRM plates, and with “Royal Air Force” on the sides, an RAF roundel and Union Flag on the rear. I removed these with cotton buds and nail polish remover. I added the thin yellow line along the sides, painted the blue warning light orange, added two blue warning lights and applied civilian VRM plates (which in reality belong on a minibus). This will primarily be found as part of the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) team on the Barra layout.

Saltire livery in Scottish public transport - inter-station & inter-island.

At the end of last year I decided that I wanted two things from my scale modelling in 2025. First, a shelf on which I would have a model representatives of Scottish air, sea, road and rail travel - one of each, and as close to 1:76 as possible. Second, a model plane in Loganair livery, again as close to 1:72 as possible.

Code 3 Dennis Dart, Plaxton Pointer, 1:76 scale Exclusive First Editions (EFE)/Bachmann.
ScotRail, Glasgow Station Link - a circular service providing a free* transit link between Queen Street & Central train stations and Buchanan Bus Station. ScotRail saltire livery.
* for valid rail ticket holders.

Revell (Matchbox casting). 1:72 scale De Havilland Canada -6 Twin Otter.
G-HIAL, Loganair & Transport Scotland. For Public Service Obligation (PSO, “lifeline service”) flights to and from Glasgow, Barra & Tiree. Saltire livery. Her registration is a reference to her original owners - Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd.

British Airways, G-BVVK at Barra Airport (EGPR), 1/72 scale

I am aware that these are models I very recently shared here, but I couldn’t resist. The completion of a new diorama board brings the perfect opportunity for a new photoshoot. Additionally I recently bought a set of chocks, which you can see if you look closely.

Pictured parked on the sand of Eoligarry’s Traigh Mhor beach, is G-BVVK, a De Havilland Canada 6 Twin Otter, of Loganair but in British Airways livery (specifically Chatham Dockyard livery and wearing a One World Alliance decal).

Barra Airport (EGPR) is the only airport in the world where scheduled flights land on a tidal beach. Barra has 3 bi-directional runways on Traigh Mhor beach (07/25, 11/29, 15/33), in a triangle pattern, aircraft can essentially always land into the wind. Loganair operated flights to & from Glasgow are Public Service Obligation “lifeline” flights, and so funded or subsidised by government.
