Blue!

An English blue vase on a Moroccan blue table, which I photographed in our garden in Teddington, west London.

The eight-pointed star, featured on the table, first appeared in Islamic art in the Middle Ages. Google tells me it’s known as khatim or khatim-sulayman, meaning 'seal of the prophets'.

- I did photograph a part of the lid of a crystal bonbonniere (see photo in first comment) with such light reflection that it looks now like origami art done with aluminum foil.

- An octagram is in geometry an eight-sided star polygon.

- Meaning of an eight-pointed star
The eight-pointed star, or octagram, has a variety of different meanings based on the interpretation of the culture or spiritual system that is using the symbol.

* From the Judeo-Christian perspective, the eight-pointed star represents new beginnings.
* However, the Babylonians believed an octagram represented the goddess Ishtar, who was associated with the planet Venus.
* The Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshimi, is represented by eight emanations, which are depicted as two intertwined squares that form an octagram. Each emanation, or point, of the octagram represents one of the following aspects of wealth: victory, patience, health, knowledge, nourishment, prosperity, mobility and monetary wealth.
* For the Egyptians, the eight-pointed star represented the eight deities known as the Ogdoad. The Egyptians believed that the Ogdoad, four female gods and four male gods, each represented a primal force or element such as water, air, darkness or infinity. Together, they created the world and the sun god Ra.
* Two overlapping squares, or an octagram, also represents duality. Each point of the square represents the four cardinal directions and the four elements: air, water, earth and fire. The top square of the octagram represents the positive aspects of the elements, and the bottom square represents the negative.

The width of the part shown in the picture is in actuality 7 cm.

Vienna's Imperial Palace, the Hofburg, was for centuries the seat of the Habsburgs, rulers of Austria until the end of WWI. A great deal of European history was written here, in particular by Empress Maria and, for a while, the German Emperor (today, it's the official seat of the Austrian Head of State, the Federal President). The complex is particularly interesting as its major buildings reflect more than 700 years of architectural history; nearly every Austrian ruler since 1275 ordered additions or alterations. As a result, the Hofburg shows many different architectural styles, from Gothic to Renaissance, Baroque to Rococo, and a smattering of Classicism. Together with its many squares and gardens, the Hofburg occupies an area of some 59 acres and is in many ways a "city-within-a-city," comprising 18 groups of buildings, 19 courtyards, and 2,600 rooms. Visitors are given three choices when visiting this spectacular site - the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum, and Silver Collection - each of which can be toured individually or as part of an extended visit. The area around the Hofburg, along with some of its outlying buildings, houses a number of other attractions, including the Imperial Chapel (Burgkapelle), the Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum), the Austrian National Library, and the Spanish Riding School.
