ORANGE-BELLIED EUPHONIA male Euphonia xanthogaster. This Orange-bellied Euphonia male is taking a brief break between bouts of drinking nectar from the flowers of the tree Erythrina megistophylla (Family Fabaceae) [endemic to Ecuador] on a mountainside in the Mindo Valley in northwestern Ecuador on June 10, 2012.
Erythrina megistophylla is endemic to Ecuador and has flowers adapted to pollination by passerine (perching) birds. We have observed a variety of passerine birds, as well as a number of hummingbird species, drinking nectar from these flowers. Porotón is one of the common names of this tree species.
