THICK-BILLED EUPHONIA Nesting Pair. Euphonia laniirostris. A nesting pair of Thick-billed Euphonias is seen perching on a stick about 20 inches to the left of their nest in Mindo in northwestern Ecuador on August 26, 2014 at 9:44 AM. The female is on the left and the male at the right. The nest is hidden among the ferns to the right of the birds and has a side entrance. The nest and ferns are on a vertical surface - a cement support structure below a house.

The nest was discovered when the adults were observed coming to feed the two nestlings within. Typically, the male and female travelled together. They would approach the nest together and perch near the nest entrance. First one (usually the male) would go to the nest to feed the young while the other (usually the female) would wait its turn nearby. Apparently the adults were feeding the nestlings using regurgitation inasmuch as they were never observed carrying food items to the nest.

The Thick-billed Euphonia is found from Costa Rica in Central America south to Bolivia and Brazil in South America.
