Southern Screamer by Stephen J Stephen

Southern Screamer

The Southern Screamer ('Chauna torquata') is a large, gray marsh bird, which despite its bill shape, is related to geese and other waterfowl.

They can be 83 to 90 cm (33 to 35 in) long and weighing about 4.4 kg (9.7 lb). They mate for life and their loud calls may be heard up to 3 km (2 miles away).

In this image you can see the carpal wing spurs which males use to fight for females and both sexes can use them for defense against predators.

I most often saw them perched in pairs at the tops of trees or flying in the sky while calling.

Young Male Jaguar

"Tango" is the handsome one year old son of "Pollyanna" and the litter mate of his sister "Madalena".

I find this this image of "Tango", perched at the top of a riverbank, particularly striking.

That look

Arriving on a river bank - Cuiabá River. Picture taken from a boat.

Facts: The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a big cat, a feline in the Panthera genus, and is the only extant Panthera species native to the Americas. The jaguar is the third-largest feline species after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Americas. The jaguar is a threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat.

It's an emotion to photograph this animal in its habitat.

Cocoi Heron by Stephen J Stephen

Cocoi Heron

The Cocoi Heron ('Ardea cocoi') is very similar in size to the Great Blue Heron. Great Blue ('Ardea herodias').

The Cocoi has a black cap, white neck and Grey-blue back and is striking looking, particularly when the birds are in the sun. It is found throughout South America and ranges as far north as Panama.

We saw them almost everywhere along waterways during our trip. The birds often took of from their perches as we approached in our boat. I was very fortunate that I got some images of this individual as it flew parallel to our boat for a few seconds.
