Connecticut Southern train CSO-4 rolls south along the Windsor Locks Canal with a pair of Providence & Worcester engines in classic paint.

Providence & Worcester train WONR makes a pickup at the siding near Polar Beverages in Worcester Yard before heading south towards Putnam to swap cars with the NRWO crew. This days power was two B39-s and a GP38-2 all wearing proper paint. I still find it fascinating it now takes two crews to move this train the 40 miles between Worcester and Plainfield.
Providence & Worcester WODA takes the freight siding towards Orms interlocking past Home Depot in Providence on a warm late-July night in 2023. Leading the way down to Davisville was PW 3905, a GE B39-8E still wearing the original Providence & Worcester paint scheme. After taking this shot I realized how similar it was to a shot I got a few weeks before of this same unit on this train at this same exact spot, and I think that's kind of cool. Man do I miss living near WODA.
Providence & Worcester WODA takes the station siding at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick on a warm early-July night in 2023. Leading the road freight from Worcester to Davisville was PW 3905, a GE B39-8E joined by a B40-8W, both in the original P&W paint scheme. This would mark the end of the first of many summer 2023 WODA chases.
Throughout the summer of 2023, I went for a ton of P&W WODAs. This was the first one of the summer that I saw on the night of July 6th. I caught up to them at Valley Falls and chased them down to Warwick. While driving through Providence, I decided to check out the Home Depot parking lot for any light and sure enough, there was plenty! Leading the freight from Worcester to Davisville was PW 3905, a GE B39-8E painted in the classic Providence & Worcester paint scheme. I was super glad this shot had worked out and I would return on plenty of other occasions.
Providence & Worcester WOGR hurries north to Gardner towards Ralph Road in Princeton on a roasting hot and hazy mid-May morning. Leading the consist of interchange traffic for Pan Am Southern was PW 3905, a GE B39-8E wearing Providence & Worcester's scarlet and brown paint scheme. I shot this train at the old depot in Holden as well, but the light was such that the photo came out completely unusable.
In recent weeks there has been a flurry opportunities to photograph properly painted Providence & Worcester power in central Connecticut. Today the NH-1 crew made the round trip from Cedar Hill and swapped cars with CT-1 and a CSOR Extra in Middletown. This was the first time I have seen three separate crews in Middletown at the same time. After the swap took place NH-1 wasted no time and headed back south seen here passing the former New Haven freight house at West Street in Middlefield. With no brake sticks on the nose and efficient switching moves in Middletown, this seemed eerily like a day on the independent P&W.
Providence & Worcester train CT-1 is seen here running south along CT Route 9 in Cromwell on the P&W Middletown Branch. This crew made the run all the way from Hartford with five cars from the CSOR interchange. I've been driving past this section of track for a while now and this is the first time I've shot a train here.
Connecticut Southern train CSO-4 rounds the curve approaching East Barber Street in Windsor, CT on Amtrak's Springfield Line. Yesterday's power was a treat for Providence & Worcester fans as both the 3905 and 2215 were paired together. Both units wearing the classic P&W scheme was a definitely a throwback to better times in New England.
On the morning of Saturday, December 16, PW took a CWR train from Pan Am interchange in Gardner for dropping on the Gardner Branch between Gardner and Worcester. Here the train is seen coming into Worcester southbound before wying and heading north while dropping rail. Another plus was there was no G&W orange power, but two PW painted GE’s.
On the last day of independent operations on the Providence & Worcester CT-1 shoves over the diamond at Middletown to rearrange a few cars and drop the railroad last remaining B23-7 off for a later crew. The lead engine casts its reflection in a pool of water as the last draw closer to ownership by the Genesee & Wyoming.
