Snow-white limestone by www.pictoquesto.com

Snow-white limestone

Pamukkale and Hierapolis were added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 - the area has been drawing visitors to its thermal springs since the time of classical antiquity.

The ancient Greek city of Hierapolis was built on top of the travertine formation which is in total about 2,700 metres long, 600 metres wide and 160 metres high. Mineral-rich waters that drip slowly down the mountainside collect in and cascade down the travertine terraces creating amazing flowing textured surfaces as well as filling pools below.

Cotton castle

The Turkish name Pamukkale (cotton castle) refers to the surface of the shimmering, snow-white limestone, shaped over millennia by calcite-rich springs. Mineral-rich waters that drip slowly down the mountainside collect in and cascade down the travertine terraces into pools below.

Travertine is a sedimentary rock deposited by mineral water from the hot springs and it extends across an area about 2,700 metres long, 600 metres wide and 160 metres high.
