Swalwell Disposal Point - IKEA Today!

Still carrying its Ministry of Supply number '71515' , Newcastle-built Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns (Works No.7169 built in 1944) was not too far from its origin when at the NCB Opencast Executive, Swalwell Disposal Point, on 24th August 1971. It simmers between duties as some remedial work is carried out on the track formation. Originally delivered to the Ministry of Fuel & Power, Ashington Opencast in April 1944, this Austerity was to serve its entire industrial career in the north east of England. It is now happily restored and resplendent in the 'Mechanical Navvies Ltd red livery at the heritage Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. This site is now on fringe of Gateshead's Metro Centre, occupied by IKEA, and is much more visited by the public than it was in 1971!
