The sea breaks along the rocky shoreline at the Nobbies on Phillip Island. Battering the land with force and eroding slowly away at the dark basalt. The land resists and life grows wild along the cliff with birds sailing above the waters.
A bit of a metaphor for the turbulent times we live in, the beauty and ferocity of nature. Plus its ability to endure, change and thrive.
This lovely Silver Gull was quite happy viewing his world from the fences on the walkway around the Nobbies Cliffs. Our built environment has provided plenty of viewpoints for these birds and others.
Others of our group photographed the same bird - he was happy posing. Check out - flic.kr/p/2qwyjAc.

The Crested Terns (Thalasseus bergii) were nesting in their thousands (or so it seemed) on the cliff side at The Nobbies, Phillip Island. In a couple of large areas the birds were packed tight and landing spaces were scare. There was quite a bit of neighbour pecking as well as other behaviour on view including this one. With the FFM group

While the Silver Gulls and Crested Terns were nesting in large colonies near the Nobbies Visitor Centre, pairs of Cape Barren Geese were wandering around or just trying to sleep in the warm sunshine nearby. This Goose was trying to snooze as the car park nearby started filling up with tourists. I would imagine it had to move on to get some peace and dubious quietness. I did like the feathers and its markings of brown and black on the wings and back. Wikipedia states "(Cereopsis novaehollandiae), sometimes also known as the pig goose, is a species of goose endemic to southern Australia. It is a distinctive large, grey bird that is mostly terrestrial " - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Barren_goose
The Nobbies is the extensive and wild, western end of Phillip Island, with cliffs, black basalt rock shelf off-shore and seems to be a great place for bird colonies. There were thousands of Crested Terns nesting, plus these noisy Silver Gulls. The fluffy Chicks seemed to be trying to cadge food off Adult birds that were not it's parents, so a pecking and screaming match was happening. Happy Wing Wednesday. As a companion to yesterdays upload, here is an image of the breeding Crested Tern Colony at The Nobbies, Phillip Island. I had my heart set on trying to capture the cascade water right in the back ground as well as the colony and in doing so, have probably cut too much of the colony off. I have other images but I still tended to like this best.
Breeding takes place between October and December each year. The speckled eggs are placed in a shallow scrape in the ground, are incubated by both sexes, and both care for the young. The chicks group together to form "creches"
Spent a lovely weekend away at Phillip Island with my Flicker friends and my dogs who behaved so well and are now moping because they miss the attention!
This image represents the chaos of the flock of breeding Crested Terns at The Nobbies on Phillip Island. A wonderful sight. The title is from a song by Pearl Jam who I am going to see tonight and most likely, the image will also be how I experience the concert, I will probably have to close my eyes alot and wear ear plugs to reduce the stimulation! But still. One I didn't want to miss. Just like the band, the image may not to be to everyone's liking!
