Mississippi Monday

Having passed the yard limit board, the Saltillo Turn's pair of GP40-2s throttle up to track speed for the run south towards Artesia. A rare southern snowstorm passed through northern Mississippi and Alabama a couple of days before, and some of the last remnants can be seen holding on in the shadows and on the ties as the train is about to duck under US 278 on the south side of Tupelo.

Tupelo Belles

The Saltillo Turn's train is still banging across the crossing with the BNSF in downtown as they ease down to the Tupelo yard to make a pickup before continuing south. Would have been to cool to see things here back in the days before all the mergers, when it was a crossing between the GM&O and the Frisco. Evan back then when the GM&O was still a through mainline between Mobile and St. Louis (unlike the truncated long branch line that remains today) it was still the sleepier of the two compared to the Frisco's busy mainline from Memphis to Birmingham.

Swampy Morning

Snow runoff has really filled up the swamp next to Interstate 22 as the Saltillo Turn eases south towards the Tupelo Yard on a bright winter morning. You might be thinking, snow runoff in Mississippi? Hard to tell here but northern Mississippi and Alabama actually got a pretty good snow by deep south standards just two days before, with up to 3 inches or so around the Tupelo area. But like most snow events down here it didn't stick around long with temperatures quickly warming back up, and only a little bit in shady areas (and on top of those coil and tank cars) was left by Sunday morning.

Of course that sharp pair of widecab GP40-2s is no stranger to winter weather, having started out working for the Canadian National before moving south to the KCS in the mid-1990s.

Belles in the Field

A new year and another quick trip to Tupelo for a Saltillo Turn Sunday, when there's an operation that seems too good to be true might as well take advantage right? Having just swapped trains with the Corinth crew, LL54 stretches out through the farm fields on the north side of town.

Downtown Shade

A nice grove of trees lines the tracks for a couple of blocks through downtown Tupelo as the Saltillo Turn eases up to the crossing with BNSF's former Frisco Memphis to Birmingham mainline.
