After years and years of reconstruction work, in 2022 the railway between Serbia's two main cities, Belgrade and Novi Sad, reopened.
During the years of reconstruction, however, freight traffic did not disappear. It was diverted along secondary lines through Vojvodina, a flat region in northern Serbia. From Novi Sad the trains travelled north towards Kać, taking the Orlovat line, a branch line in the middle of the plain. From there, after a big curve, the trains turned south towards Pančevo, reconnecting in this town about ten kilometres from Belgrade to the main electrified line to Nis.
In this photo, a mixed freight train pulled by a Class 661 passes the station of Kovačica, which was still equipped with old semaphores. The slow pace of this train allowed me to take three photos between Kovačica and Pančevo.
