DjennÈ, Mali. It is ultimately a clash between tourists looking for something authentic and Malian residents not wanting to feel like they live in a museum. The town, which sits on an island in the Bani River, lacks basic infrastructure like sewage and garbage removal, prompting a warning from UN officials that it could be removed from the World Heritage list.
