Official Florida 1976 Bicentennial Map with Chief Bolecks

Chief Bolecks (1810-1859), also known as Chief Billy Bowlegs, was a significant leader of the Seminole tribe in Florida. He played a crucial role in the Second (1835-1842) and Third (1855-1858) Seminole Wars, leading resistance efforts against U.S. forces attempting to remove the Seminoles from their lands. His leadership and resilience were vital in the Seminole people's fight to remain in Florida. With the possibilities of military victory dwindling, he finally agreed to relocate with his people to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1858.

His recognition on the 1976 Bicentennial Folding Map highlights his importance in Florida's history and the broader narrative of Native American resistance and resilience. The map commemorates 500 years of Florida history, and featuring Chief Bolecks underscores his legacy and the enduring impact of the Seminole Wars on the state's history.

Map of Florida (c. 1565) by Jacques le Moyne de Morgues.

Published in 1591, this is the first French map to show Florida and is included with the Official Florida 1976 Bicentennial Map.

Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533–1588) was a French artist and member of Jean Ribeault’s expedition to the New World in the 1560s. His depictions of Native American life and culture, colonial life, and plants are of extraordinary historical importance.
