The Majesty in Color

Motionless majesty, wings spread like a feathered armor.
His gaze steady, calm — almost human.
A moment suspended in shadow, where light sculpts texture, detail, and life.
No décor, no artifice: just him, and everything he tells in perfect silence.

Official Florida 1976 Bicentennial Map with Chief Bolecks

Chief Bolecks (1810-1859), also known as Chief Billy Bowlegs, was a significant leader of the Seminole tribe in Florida. He played a crucial role in the Second (1835-1842) and Third (1855-1858) Seminole Wars, leading resistance efforts against U.S. forces attempting to remove the Seminoles from their lands. His leadership and resilience were vital in the Seminole people's fight to remain in Florida. With the possibilities of military victory dwindling, he finally agreed to relocate with his people to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1858.

His recognition on the 1976 Bicentennial Folding Map highlights his importance in Florida's history and the broader narrative of Native American resistance and resilience. The map commemorates 500 years of Florida history, and featuring Chief Bolecks underscores his legacy and the enduring impact of the Seminole Wars on the state's history.

“We Too Have a Job to Do” by Norman Rockwell.

On the cover of a 68-page book of advertisers who supported the 1945 Boy Scout Circus in St. Louis, March 1-3.

A "Boy Scout Circus" is a performance or event put on by a Boy Scout troop – in this case the St. Louis Council – showcasing various skills and activities they’ve learned through scouting, including things like first aid, knot tying, camping techniques, and sometimes even entertaining acts like juggling or acrobatics, all presented in a circus-like format with audience engagement.

Acts could include things like rope climbing, fire building, flag ceremonies, and skits related to scouting themes. It was often used as a fundraising event as well as to engage with the local community.

“Pin-Up Girl” Betty Grable for Chesterfield Cigarettes in “Harper’s Bazaar,” February, 1944.

Betty Grable’s blend of glamour, talent and the girl-next-door charm made her a beloved figure of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Her films during the 1930s and 1940s grossed more than $100 million. She was among the top 10 box office stars for 10 consecutive years from 1942 to 1951, a record matched by few other actresses. Betty Grable was also the top pin-up girl for American soldiers during World War II, surpassing Rita Hayworth. Her famous bathing-suit poster became one of the most iconic images of the era. Her legs were so admired that 20th Century-Fox insured them with Lloyds of London for $1 million as a publicity stunt. [Wikipedia]
