Another look at the University of Birmingham Guild of Students building.
The Guild of Students building by Holland W. Hobbiss, 1928-30. E-plan front, with three big gables, inspired by Midlands manor houses. Brown brick with red relieving arches and stone dressings. A chimney out of Nesfield's Kinmel Park breaks the symmetry. Central plaque by William Bloye. The back has giant Ionic pilasters of the Kirby Hall type. Extensions by Holland W. Hobbiss & Partners, 1948-51 and 1960, form three sides of a quad surrounding the Mermaid Fountain by Bloye, 1960.
