LN-KLK Convair 440-75 Metropolitan (cn 357), Norsk Metropolitan Klubb

West Malling, UK - 31 August 1987

6th Great Warbirds Air Display

The Norsk Metropolitan Klubb was a non-commercial organisation set up to preserve and operate LN-KLK after it had been retired from active service with Nor-Fly in Mar 1984. The club's main aim was to arrange trips for aviation enthusiasts to places of aviation interest both in Norway and abroad, as well as general pleasure flights. It seems to have been very active for a number of years, and made quite a few visits to suitable 'vintage-type' airshows in the UK. Unfortunately, new safety regulations and increasing maintenance costs meant that it became unviable to continue, and LN-KLK was grounded in June 1988. The Great Warbirds Air Display 87 was the last time it came to the UK, and was probably one of its last airshow appearances anywhere.

Swissair

HB-IMC was wfu by Swissar on 1 November 1966, while D-ABIB in the background was delivered on 22 February 1964 as the first B727-30 for Lufthansa. Converted to a Convair 640, this airframe would return a number of times as PH-MAL with Martinair in the late 1960s.

Information from airliners.net (thanks to Gary Vincent):
1956 vintage Convair started out as a 440 for Swissair (delivered as HB-IMC in June 1956). Ten years later it was sold to Martin's Air Charter (Martinair) as PH-MAL where it was converted to 640 standard. Imported to the USA in 1971 by Omni International as N640R. The aircraft joined the fleet of the new Zantop International Airlines in 1972 when they bought it in June. It went on to fly with Zantop for the next 25 years.

Has been active for Aeronaves TSM as XA-UNH since 2010. Damaged in gear-up landing at Plan de Guadalupe International Airport in Saltillo, Mexico during the early hours of September 20, 2017.

OO-VGU was seen at Riem on 7 May 1974, probably the precise date for this shot. The ramp looks empty here, but several other interesting visitors were reported on this cloudy day: Transmeridian Air Cargo (TMAC)/Express Flug Service (EFS) CL-44D4-2 G-AXAA, THY Fokker F-27-100 TC-TOY and Aeroflot Tu-134A CCCP-65973.

As OO-UVG, this airframe had been noted at Riem on 28 November 1972 and 15 March 1973. Note the Ajax Amsterdam logo on the nose.

Initially delivered to REAL Brazil in November 1956. To Iberia as EC-ATG in November 1962. To DAT as OO-UVG in July 1972 (re-registered as OO-VGU in October 1973). Sold to American Inter-Island in May 1977 as N44826. Finally operated by Air Resorts Airlines from November 1982. Wfu and stored at their base at Carlsbad, CA, from December 1993 and eventually broken up in the mid-1990s. (Sources: rzjets.net, Stephan Barth on airhistory.net)

Convair 440-98 Metropolitan

Kar-Air

A rare photo of the real OH-VKN with original operator Kar-Air. This airframe later returned to Riem as OH-LRH with Finnair (noted on 6 July and 26 July 1969, but probably visited more often - Finnair Metropolitans were regularly seen at Riem during the 1960s in winter and summer).

The Metropolitan painted as Kar-Air OH-VKN at the Museo Aeronáutico de Málaga in Spain is a former SAS aircraft (SE-BSY, c/n 503) and never flew with Kar-Air. It had been seized at the airport in May 2006 as N8042W and was repainted as Kar-Air OH-VKN in October 2009 in recognition of the fact that the actual OH-VKN had operated the 1st international flight into Málaga in 1959. (Source: Danny Grew on airhistory.net)

Information from bsl-mlh-planes.net (slightly adapted):
Delivered to Kar-Air in June 1958. Finnair took delivery of this aircraft, one of the last CV-440s built, from Kar-Air in December 1964 and continued to operate it domestically until 1977. After that, the Metropolitan flew as LN-KLV for Nor-Fly for about a year before being sold to North Cariboo Flying Service in Canada as C-GRNB. In November 1986 it went on to Renown Aviation as N202RA. After the collapse of Renown Aviation, the aircraft was stranded in Roswell, New Mexico but made available at Opa Locka for Vision Air Haiti in the winter of 2009/10 as HH-VAH.
