Cypripedium parviflorun variety pubescens, the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper Orchid.
A nice group shot of a double-flowered YLS with another more-typical single-flowered plant. These flowers exhibits the typical colouration of the petals and sepals, but more importantly the elongated 'slipper' shaped pouch, of var. pubescens.
Newfoundland has locations that are famous for vast numbers of YLS. Unfortunately the extreme heat a couple of weeks before pushed almost all of the flowers past their prime. I searched for several hours at this location: all I saw were hundreds and hundreds of plants with crispy flowers. Finally, along a seaside trail, I found these handful of plants tucked underneath some larger trees, that had recognizable flowers...
We didn't see any more YLS flowers, even at the northernmost tip of the island.

Cypripedium parviflorun variety pubescens, the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper Orchid.
A nice single flowered YLS, just about finished.
This flower exhibits the typical colouration of the petals and sepals of var. pubescens, but an atypical more rounded 'slipper' shaped pouch, closer to var. makasin.

Cypripedium parviflorun variety pubescens, the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper Orchid.
A nice double-flowered single YLS, just about finished. It looks like the upper flower is 'floating' in space!!
These flowers exhibit the typical colouration of the petals and sepals and pouch shape of var. pubescens.

Cypripedium parviflorun variety pubescens, the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper Orchid.
3/4 view, showing the magenta spotting inside the pouch that shows up as faint lines on the outside. This flower exhibits the typical colouration of the petals and sepals but more importantly the elongated 'slipper' shaped pouch of var. pubescens.
Newfoundland has locations that are famous for vast numbers of YLS. Unfortunately at this location (Boutte du Cap Park), the extreme heat a couple of weeks before, pushed almost all of the flowers past their prime. I searched for several hours but 'only' saw hundreds and hundreds of plants with crispy flowers. Finally, along a seaside trail, I found these handful of plants tucked underneath some larger trees, that had recognizable flowers...

Cypripedium acaule, the Moccasin Flower or Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid.
A slightly ragged example of a Pink Lady's Slipper.
Given all the heat and advanced flowering of the other orchids in the area it was quite the surprise to find one of these still hanging on in flower. There was only one plant with a flower, and it was tucked under some overhanging branches high above a cool stream below.
The 5th different orchid species we saw in Newfoundland.
