Welcome to artworkshopwithpaul - Tuition & Guidance for the Artist in Everyone by Paul Taggart - Artist, Author, Presenter, Producer

Welcome to artworkshopwithpaul - Tuition & Guidance for the Artist in Everyone

“Everyone who knows me, understands that creating artworks is the very essence of my being. It is a passion that I also love to share with others who wish to take up painting, whether as a pursuit, or as a profession. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to witness the fulfilling effect that creativity has on someone else’s well-being and self-esteem.

You can imagine therefore, how, over the years, both Eileen and I have felt truly privileged to receive news from folk round the world, telling us how meaningful painting has come to be in troubled times. Which is why we have always said that once you’ve picked up a brush to create your first artwork, painting becomes a companion for life.

•As such, we have also, always, felt a responsibility to make my tutorials meaningful.
•That we should aim to provide the essential painting guide.
•One that is based on a structured, step-by-step journey.
•Starting out from the first tentative basic steps, before moving onwards and upwards.

From the outset this was our guiding principle.
It is how my thirteen instructional books were planned and how we structured our online video tutorials from the very beginning (now numbering well over 700 videos, contained within over 70 box-sets).

Our tutorials are not random, they are carefully considered.
We do not simply say “Today we will show you how to paint a flower”, or “Today we will paint a landscape.” For how can someone paint a flower if they do not understand the basics of their painting equipment, or comprehend the myriad techniques and methods that could be exploited, to make their artistic journey as satisfying as it can be?"

We look forward to your company and, as always, send best wishes, from Eileen and myself,”

“Whenever I go through my many sketchbooks, each containing sketches and drawings made over the years, I am immediately taken back to that time – such is the power of sketching and drawing.

These are visual journals – words in pictures, but so much more than that – they also depict the emotions of the moment, or the characteristics of the event or scene. I can recall all this and so much more, because I had to closely observe the subject, to capture its essence.

Such as the time when we had taken a group of artists for a painting week in Portugal and something that happened on one particular day – watch our Module 1 INTRODUCTION VIDEO to hear more about the event that inspired Paul Taggart’s Essential Sketching & Drawing Guide..

The art of sketching and drawing can range from the simplest of quickly rendered sketches, through to the most detailed of tonal drawings – the choice is yours alone to make.

Sketches and drawings can be rendered using a wide range of possible equipment – from the simplest pencil to an exciting range of water-based tools.

Sketching and drawing sits alongside painting – as an equivalent art-form in its own right or as a companion to painting.

Which is what Paul Taggart’s Essential Sketching & Drawing Guide is all about …

We are breaking down the art of sketching and drawing even further than we’ve done before, back to the bare essentials, so that whatever your level … whether a complete beginner … or someone who wants to develop your sketching & drawing further … you will enjoy the results of working-along with the projects.

We kick off with Module 1, in which a 2B pencil is our drawing tool and this box-set featuring three step-by-step, work-along projects, in which I share three specific techniques.

Each of the three projects comprises six video tutorials.

Each project starts with a video in which I feature one drawing tool and share tips on how to use it.

Every element in any subject has four principal properties – edge, volume, colour or tone and texture. So, the next four videos in each project feature a series of exercises - showing you how to successfully portray these four properties - to bring a three-dimensional quality to your sketches and drawings.

For the final video in each of the three projects, I guide you step-by-step on the method of how to exploit the 2B pencil, working from start-to-finish, on a sketching study of the complete still-life.

Work-along with me, on three of the most common subjects, at a pace to suit you - and let your pencil take you on this journey of discovery.

“How to Draw and Paint Children” by Viola French. Part of the Walter T. Foster series on “How to Draw.” Published by Foster Art Service, Inc. of Laguna Beach, CA. Unknown date. Many of you will be familiar of the Foster series still being produced and sold today, but I believe this to be an earlier edition. The style points to the 30’s or 40’s, the format is huge (10 ¼ by 13 ¾), and there are about 38 unnumbered pages including inside front and back covers. The soft cover is lithographed and stapled. Price was $1.00, not more than $1.25 in any foreign country. Viola French also wrote “How to Draw and Paint Fashions” and “How to Draw and Paint Today’s Fashions” for Walter T. Foster.

NOT original:
“Walter T. Foster (1891-1981) is primarily known for producing "How to Draw" books for amateur artists. Originally a one-person operation based in his garage, Foster self-published in 1919 his first book of what was to become eventually a series of more than 200 titles. Over the years Foster commissioned different artists to assist him in producing these books. Many of these artists became personal friends and he included their works in an art collection in his home in Laguna Beach, California.”

That paragraph came directly from this link: www.rakusan.net/fosterbook.html.
The link goes on to say:

“After Foster died in 1981, his heirs ran the business for a while before selling it outside the family in 1988. At that time the new owners ceased reprinting all of the back titles including the Rakusan book. Since that time the business has been sold yet again. The present Walter Foster Company no longer has any contact or connection with the Foster family, but it still continues to sell similar art books as a subsidiary of a larger printing company.”
