
This section of the boardwalk thru the Painted Cove protects soil below but also gets you up close and personal with the unique red soil and pebbles that make Oregon's Painted Hills so special and unique.
The trail is quite short, only .25 mile. I'll post a couple more images next to better show off this favorite stop in the Painted Hills.
"Twenty to thirty million years ago volcanic ash settled in
deep deposits over eastern Oregon. Natural processes
transformed the ash into bentonite, a type of clay which
expands as it absorbs water. When drying, the clay con-
tracts, leaving the numerous small cracks that give the hills
a "popcorn-like" appearance. The warm colors are from iron
