29th January 2025 at Drygate Brewery, Glasgow.
Celtic Connections Festival, www.celticconnections.com/.
Country: Australia. Style: Singer Songwriter.
Lineup: Emily Barker (v/g/keyboard/harmonica), Alex Heane (bass g/b/v), Rob Pemberton (d/synthisizer/keyboard/v) and guests: Hannah Fisher (v), Mairearad Green (v).
Emily Barker was born in Bridgetown, WA and is now based in Fremantle (having moved back to Australia around 2023 after two decades in the UK). In 2024 she toured as the support for King Cresote, and two members of his band, Hannah Fisher and Mairearad Green, provided backing vocals for one song, This was the third time I have seen her live. The others were in 2007 at the Arts Theatre in Leicester Square/Covent Garden (a duo with Gill Sandell) and in 2011 at Guildhall Yard as part of the City of London Festival (with Red Clay Halo). 28th January 2025 at Cottiers Theatre, Glasgow.
Celtic Connections Festival, www.celticconnections.com/.
Country: United States. Style: Traditional American & Contemporary Folk.
Lineup: Willie Watson (v/g/banjo/harmonica).
Willie Watson is from Watkins Glen, NY and lives in Los Angeles, CA. He told us that his grandfather and grandmother along with his aunt and father (then aged 7 and 3) emigrated to the USA from Glasgow. Watson was a founding member of Old Crow Medicine Show, and was in the band from 1998 until 2011. In his solo career he has released two albums of traditional songs "Folk Singer Volume 1" (2014) and "Folksinger Volume 2" (2017) before in 2024 releasing "Willie Watson" an album of his own compositions which he sees as his "debut album".. At this concert he performed some of these plus "John Henry", "Gallows Pole", "God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign", "Hills of Mexico", "Mole in the Ground" (learned from Bascom Lamar Lunsford), "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings" (Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings) and "Dancing on my Own" (Robyn, introduced as an "Old Swedish Folk Song"). I saw Watson twice with the Old Crow Medicine Show in 2005 at Lock 17 (Dingwalls) and in 2010 at the Troxy. I took photos of the band in 2014 at the Roundhouse www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157648632627010/). but that was after he was in his own words "kicked out".
