This week's North Country at Work photo shows Fred Mayer and Dan McDougall in their blacksmith, wheelwright, and carriage shop, which was located on the northwest side of Main Street in Hammond. It was taken circa 1900-1910.

Few things beat the sound of EMD motors slogging up precipitous gradients, and South Shore just may be the place to witness such an event. With a pair of the railroad's SD38-2s and a GP38-2 in trail, a BNSF Interchange coal train is seen bellowing smoke to indicate one thing: the fight for the hill has begun. For a railroad originally built to handle lightweight interurban passenger trains, its always a spectacle watching modern freights tackle the roller coaster-esk hills.

And yes, this is the same type of car as Richard Hammond's 'Oliver'.
